Is the move-out process being phased?
Yes, in support of the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Governor Tom Wolf’s plan to re-open the state, students and families who currently live in a “green” or “yellow” area of Pennsylvania, or a similar situation out of state, are only allowed to register for move-out once receiving an invitation to do so. Students who live in a “red” area in PA or a similar situation out of state are required to wait until their area is cleared to re-open AND they receive an email invitation to schedule their move-out.
Penn State is focused on a move-out process that mirrors the statewide order and minimizes risks for not only students and their families, but our employees and community, too. Students are expected to demonstrate integrity, respect, and ethical behavior regarding the move-out process.
To help keep individuals safe, staff members wearing masks and gloves will clean and disinfect on a regular basis meeting accepted practices to combat COVID-19. We also expect all individuals to follow masking and social distancing requirements while on campus.
When will move-out occur?
Move-out time slots are specific to each campus based on the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Governor Tom Wolf's plan to re-open the state. Four time slots are available each day, with limited availability for each time slot.
Roommates should coordinate move-out times so there is at least a seven-day separation between each student’s move-out time. All individuals entering the residence hall must wear a mask, bring their own cleaning supplies, and practice proper social distancing.
***Additional dates may be added towards the end of the move-out process to accommodate students.

When can I sign up for a move-out date and time?
Students who live in areas of Pennsylvania where stay-at-home restrictions have been eased will be individually contacted through their Penn State email to inform them that they schedule a move-out date and time.
Where can I sign-up for a move-out time?
Students will be provided sign-up instructions in the email sent to their Penn State account once they are permitted to return to campus.
My home location and/or campus location was just announced to be cleared to reopen but there are no times available to schedule?
It may take up to 24 hours to update our systems and documentation after an announcement is made. Keep checking the website for updates and monitor your Penn State email.
Can I change the move-out date and time that I signed up for?
If a student needs to change their move-out time, they may choose another available time slot by using the same system that they scheduled the original move-out time. The option "unselect time for now" is also available if a student accidentally selected a move-out time without permission or is unsure of which date to select. A move-out time can be selected again, once the student receives the email invitation.
What is the schedule for sign-up times?
To reduce the number of individuals who are on campus at any given time, the move-out timeframe will occur over multiple days. A limited number of two-hour time slots are available during each day, and each time slot will allow only a specific number of students to select a time slot.
There are no time slots available that work with my schedule, what should I do?
In an effort to maintain the health and safety of students, families, and staff members, only a limited number of students can be on campus at any given time, reducing the number of time slots available. We suggest regularly checking the move-out schedule for available times, as there will be students who change their scheduled time, freeing up additional time slots. If you ultimately cannot find an open time that works for you, select the option “I am not able to return to campus to retrieve my personal belongings”, and we will reach out to you to discuss options.
Is there a deadline to sign-up for move-out?
There is no deadline to schedule a move-out time, but we do anticipate that some of the time slots may be more popular than others. Students can schedule a time until the end of the move-out period, currently scheduled for Sunday June 7.
Why do I need to schedule a time — can’t I just show up at a time that works for me and my family?
The University is limiting the number of students who are on campus at any given time so that the move-out process is safe for students, family members and staff. Building access is only added to a student’s Penn State id+ Card for the move-out date and time that they have scheduled, so students will not be able to access the buildings outside of their selected two-hour window. University offices remain closed, so there will be reduced staff onsite to assist students with the move-out process.
Can my roommate and I move-out at the same time?

I live in on-campus apartments. Do I have to sign up for a time slot to return to campus?
Yes, all students need to sign-up for a move-out time, as the total number of students on campus needs to be limited and building card access needs to be assigned as buildings will be locked.
Am I able to sign up for multiple move-out times?
Students may only sign up for one 2-hour move-out time slot.
There are multiple students in our family who need to move out, how should we schedule move-out times?
There are three suggestions:
- If you are bringing multiple vehicles to campus: You may want to schedule the move-out times for the same date/time, so that each student can move out separately.
- If you are bringing only one vehicle to campus: You may want to schedule the move-out times to be sequential, so you can move out one student during the first time slot, then go to the second student’s room for the second time slot. Please be aware that the building access will only work during the scheduled two-hour time slot.
- You may also select a move-out time for each student to occur on a different date. Please be aware that you would only be able to access the one student’s room assignment who is scheduled to move-out during that time slot.
I missed getting to campus during my scheduled move-out time. What do I do now?
You can schedule another move-out time slot in eLiving until the end of the announced move-out timeframe.
What precautions is Penn State taking to help keep individuals safe when they return to campus?

Are there any special instructions for the move-out process?
All individuals entering the residence hall must wear a mask, bring their own cleaning supplies, and practice proper social distancing. We are also asking that roommates do not schedule move-out times at the same time; it is preferable that roommates schedule move-out times that are at least seven days apart.
How many people can come to visit for move-out?
Due to the ongoing severity of the situation, the University is asking students to return alone, or have only one individual accompany them to campus. Students will have a limited time to remove all items and clean the room before leaving campus. Students should not plan on visiting other buildings or locations during this trip.
Can I leave my items in my room, since I will be returning for the fall semester?
Students may not leave personal items in University housing, and all items need to be removed. If you are not able to return to campus, you can contract with our storage partners to have your personal belongings stored:
For University Park: The University has partnered for Storage Squad to provide a storage and shipping solution for students. Storage Squad accepts reservations online and offers packing supplies (boxes and tape), pick-up, and delivery storage services to both on- and off-campus housing for fall semester, as well as domestic shipping via UPS Ground Service. Once you sign up for service, Housing Operations will place the requested number of boxes and tape in your room prior to your scheduled move-out time. Learn more about shipping and storage options.
For all other campuses: The University has partnered with Collegeboxes.com to provide a storage and shipping solution for students. Please contact your Housing and Food Service Office for more information about this option.
Will moving carts be available?
Moving carts will be available in the lobby of each building, and Housing Operations staff will sanitize carts before and after each party’s use. You may also want to bring a supply of disinfecting wipes to assist with cleaning items.
Will my building card access work?
Buildings will be locked. Students’ building card access will only work for the two-hour move-out time slot that they selected in eLiving. Students who arrive before or after this time period will not be able to gain entry to the building.
Is there a specific entry point or can I access through any door in my hall?
Students may use any regular entry door to gain access to the building.
Do I need to return my room key?
All room keys must be returned to the University. During the move-out process, there will be designated remote room key drop boxes located throughout each housing area, which will eliminate the need to return the key directly to the Commons Desk or Housing and Food Services Office. A room key envelope will be available in students’ rooms in advance of the move-out process, and the envelope should be completed with the appropriate information, then insert the room key, secure the envelope, and drop in the designated room key dropbox.
For students who have already removed all personal items and do not need to return to campus but still have the room key, or have accidentally taken the key home, the room key can be mailed in a padded envelope to the University to avoid any core change charges:

Students will receive a confirmation email once the University receives the room key and processes the check-out.
What if I lost my room key and/or ID card?
The Commons Desks at University Park and Housing and Food Services Offices at other Penn State locations will not be able to issue loaner room keys or temporary/replacement ID cards during the move-out process. Please call your Housing Operations office so that staff can provide access.
Do I need a check-out form?
Check-out forms and room key envelopes will be delivered to student rooms in advance of the move-out process. The form will include instructions for move-out and where to return the room key.
Do I need to complete a room inspection?
Once a student has moved out all personal belongings, typically there is a room inspection by a Housing Operations or Residence Life staff. To limit personal contact with others, room inspections will not be conducted at the time of move-out. Staff will inspect rooms after the move-out process and will let students know if there were any issues found in the room. Please be sure to clean the room and the refrigerator/microwave unit and remove all trash to the dumpsters located outside of the building.
Can I pick up my mail and packages?
In anticipation of the move-out process, packages have been delivered to students’ rooms. If the student also had U.S. Mail, the mail was attached to the package. Any other U.S. Mail has been forwarded to the student’s permanent address that is listed in LionPATH. Please remember to change your online ship-to addresses so items are not delivered to campus.
Do I need a parking pass during the move-out process?
During the move-out process, the University is not requiring any parking permit. Students may park in any paved lot or parking garage for free while they move out. Please park in actual parking spots, not on grass areas or in the road.
Will I be able to donate items to the Trash To Treasure or United Way programs?
Due to the outbreak, there will be no collection of donated items for these programs this year. Students may wish to hold on to items and donate them to their local charities when the time is appropriate.
I am traveling from out-of-state. Will I be able to spend the night in my room?
The move-out process is only for students to remove personal belongings from the room, and the University is not able to allow students to stay overnight in the building. If your travel arrangements require that you spend the night, you will need to make a reservation at a local hotel. Please be aware that hotel availability may be limited, as some facilities are temporarily closed.
Will I be able to eat a meal on campus or make a purchase with my Campus Meal Plan and/or LionCash+ account?
All food service operations will be closed, and students will not be able to make any purchases on campus. Limited take-out and drive-thru options are available around town.
I have a physical disability — what accommodations are available to me? Can I have more time to pack up my room?
We are happy to work with any student who needs a special accommodation for move-out. Please call your Housing Operations office so that staff can discuss options.
Additional Information for Students at University Park
Are the Nittany Lion Inn or Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center open?
No. Both on-campus hotels at University Park are closed.
Can I return my books while I'm on campus?
The Penn State Bookstore is currently closed. Students who have rented textbooks through the Penn State Bookstore may return them free via UPS by filling out this online form: https://psu.bncollege.com/shop/psu/page/rental-book-return. The deadline to return rented textbooks was extended to July 1.
Can I return my parking pass when I check out of my residence hall?
Student parking permits are valid for only one or two semesters and should be discarded after they expire. The majority of student permit holders received a prorated refund of their parking fees due to the remote learning period, along with instructions to destroy and discard their permits.
Will I be able to return library books and materials that I have checked out?
Due dates for all library materials checked out have been extended through at least August 13. Students are asked not to return any library materials at this time unless absolutely necessary, as returns are not being processed until the University Libraries resume regular operations. If you must return materials, they can be dropped off at any Libraries book return slot. Books may also be returned via mail to:

Will the Bursar’s office be open so I can pay my bill?
The Bursar’s office will not be opened for in-person service. Please visit bursar.psu.edu for information.
Will the Berkey Creamery be open?
